  • Wealthy and Congressmen did not like it.

  • Jackson wanted to save the Union.

  • Jackson defended the country over his own needs.

    • -5 different tribes were removed onto “Indian territory” (Oklahoma) according to the Indian removal act signed by Jackson.

    • Jackson’s reasons for Indian removal- Indians not developing or “wasting” the land. Ordinary white Americans should be allowed to use it for farming cotton. Indians slowing down the economy.

    • Economic Reasons- Southern land was the best for crop growing. Cotton was a very profitable cash crop at the time.

    • Trail of Tears: Cherokee challenge law to Supreme Court and win. Jackson got one Cherokee chief to sign a treaty, so they had to leave.

    • Bad effects on the 1,000 journey, 4,000 die.
